Can Bearded Dragons Eat Scrambled Eggs?

For most people throughout the world, eggs are at the top of the list of options available for breakfast. This is not only because eggs are highly nutritious, but they are also easy to prepare. But are eggs as beneficial for bearded dragons as they are for humans? As a caring beardie owner, if you have ever considered offering scrambled eggs to your bearded friend, this article is for you.

Yes, eggs are as nutritious and beneficial for breaded dragons as for humans, and your bearded dragon can eat scrambled eggs. However, it’s crucial to remember that, unlike humans, beardies can only eat eggs in limited quantities. So you should not feed your adult bearded dragon more than half of the egg once a week. On the other hand protein requirements of baby beardies are higher; still, they should not be allowed to eat more than two eggs a week.

We have discussed below the reasons why beardies should eat eggs in limited amounts only; however, let’s first see how to prepare scrambled eggs for bearded dragons and what precautions should be kept in mind.

How To Prepare Scrambled Egg For Bearded Dragons (Precautions To Consider While Preparing Scrambled Egg For Bearded Dragons)

While preparing scrambled egg for your beardie, remember that only fully cooked, plain eggs are safe for beardies. So never add any additional ingredients (that we usually add while preparing an egg for ourselves, like spices, butter, seasoning, etc.), and ensure that the egg is fully cooked. The addition of any of such ingredients and half or partially-cooked egg can harm your bearded friend.

After preparing scrambled egg, offers it to your beardie along with staple vegetables or greens (like spinach, kale, mustard greens, pumpkin pie, finely chopped carrots etc.). However, note that vegetables should never be cooked with the egg; rather, mix it with the vegetables after cooking and cooling it.

Nutritional Benefits Of Scrambled Egg For A Bearded Dragon

Eggs offer a lot of benefits for bearded dragons when adequately prepared (following the tips mentioned above) and fed in the right amount. Some advantages of feeding scrambled eggs to your bearded dragon are listed below.

Protein

The world knows eggs as a high-quality and dense but cheap source of protein. Bearded dragons need protein for growth, maintenance of muscle mass, organ function, bone development and strength, stronger immunity, different metabolic functions, etc.

Vitamins

Eggs are a great source of different vitamins.

Benefits
Vitamin DThis is essential for bearded dragons to absorb calcium and maintain strong bones.
Vitamin B12Bearded dragons need vitamin B12 for nerve and brain function and energy metabolism.
Vitamin AEggs contain a significant amount of vitamin A, which is vital for skin and eye health in bearded dragons.
Vitamin E & KEggs also contain vitamins E, & K, which are required for a healthy and more robust immune system and blood clotting, respectively.

Minerals

Eggs are a great source of different minerals necessary for the survival of bearded dragons.

  • Calcium: Bearded dragons need calcium for the growth and strength of bones and muscles. However, it’s important to note that calcium in eggs is not well-absorbed by reptiles (due to higher phosphorus contents), so other sources of calcium may also be needed.
  • Iron: Eggs are a good source of iron, which is essential for oxygen transport in the blood.
  • Eggs also contain zinc, folate and selenium; these minerals are also required for different metabolic functions.

Antioxidants

Egg yolk contains some antioxidants, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, which can help protect cells from damage and support overall health by fighting free radicals.

Why Should Bearded Dragons Eat Eggs In Moderation Only?

Since eggs are packed with protein, eating such a diet in large amounts by a bearded dragon (who already eats protein-rich insects in routine) can lead to many health issues like diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease, heart failure, etc. However, if you feel that your beardie is weak, malnourished, or underweight, you can feed a little more egg than the recommended amount.

The Final Verdict

Scrambled eggs are as beneficial for bearded dragons as for humans, as long as you follow the above mentioned precautions and don’t exceed the recommended amount.
